Vaccinations

Vaccinations work by stimulating the animals immune system into recognising potential disease threats and then when exposed to those threats, mounting a massive immune response to eliminate the threat. Young animals get a little bit of protection from their mother (maternal immunity), however that wanes after 6-8 weeks so all young puppies and kittens get a "primary course" of injections to give then adequate immune cover to protect against disease.

As adult pets, it's important that your veterinarian, in consultation with yourself determine what is the appropriate vaccination regime, taking into account your pets health, environment and lifestyle. We typically recommend annual boosters for adult pets that have had all their primary vaccines.

Diagnostic imaging

Xrays

Digital radiology has revolutionised radiology world wide, not only as it removes all the hazardous chemicals associated with old school x-ray development, but more importantly it enables immediate imaging of the patients and the ability of our veterinarians to change the contrast, magnification etc of the image to vastly increase the ability to make a more accurate diagnosis.

It also gives us the ability, if needed, to email images to a radiographic specialist or our orthopaedic specialist for feed back on unusual cases or potential orthopaedic surgeries. This is obvious a bonus to the well-being and treatment of our patients.

Ultrasounds

We currently don't have an in house ultrasound machine, but we do have Dr Ross Barter from Newcastle Veterinary Ultrasound visit our clinic when requested. For more urgent cases we may refer you to SASH at Tuggerah.

Our modern, well-equipped hospital offers comprehensive services including health checks, vaccinations, dentistry, surgery, diagnostic imaging, and care for pocket pets.

In-House Laboratory

Lorn Veterinary Hospital commits to providing the best quality care for our patients, and as such, we have an in house laboratory.

This enables us to provide immediate analysis of bloods test and urine samples on patients, be they emergency presentations, or merely pre anaesthetic blood testing when required. We also use external laboratory services, so for more complex samples such as histopathology samples and culture and sensitivity swabs, we send those off for veterinary pathologists to analyse.

Surgery

We commonly perform a range of soft tissue surgeries here at our clinic. They range from but not limited to; routine desexings, lacerations, growth removals and abdominal procures. We have comfortable recovery cages, anaesthetic monitoring equipment, patient warming systems and a heated floor cage for animals recovery from procedures.

We also work in close association with a specialist orthopaedic surgeon who visits our hospital for complicated procedures.

Dentistry

Your pets dental hygiene is very important to their ongoing health. Whether your pet has bad breath, dental disease, retained teeth, or whether you just want to do the best by maintaining their oral health, our practice is well equipped to cater to their general dental needs.

Services available include:

  • iM3 Ultrasonic dental machine for scaling and polishing of teeth
  • human dental air driven high and low speed hand pieces
  • purpose designed dental instruments
  • pain medication and local anaesthesia
  • high end patient and anaesthetic monitoring
  • prophylactic cleaning
  • general oral surgery including extractions
  • preventative dental management including; tooth brushes, animal tooth pastes, dental rinses, plaque off and prescription diets, i.e. Hills T/d diet
  • dental examinations and treatment plans

Parasite control and prevention

Lorn veterinary hospital offers flea and tick control for both cats and dogs and worming control. Please ask our staff which products will best suit your pet. Younger animals need worming more frequently if younger than 6 months of age.

We also offer annual heart worm prevention injections for added peace of mind.

If starting an adult pet on heart worm prevention with no prior coverage, please speak to your vet first as they might require heart worm testing prior.

Microchipping

A microchip is form of permanent identification. It is an implant the size of a grain of rice and is injected under the skin which we can do during a regular consultation with the vet. We will also give you information on how to register your pet.

No personal information is stored on the microchip, only the unique identification number. An implanted microchip does not cause any ongoing pain or discomfort to your cat or dog. The microchip does not require a battery or any maintenance and is designed to last the life of your pet.

It is a legal requirement in NSW that all dogs and cats are microchipped and registered either before they are 12 weeks of age OR sold or given away from pet shops, commercial breeders and pounds or shelters- whichever comes first.

Grooming

We offer basic grooming for cats and dogs, generally under sedation. Nail trims and ear cleaning can be done by our nurses when booked in for a nurse consult.
